The Unsex'd
Females: Note 49
Chapone's Letters on the Improvement of the Mind, are
incontestible proofs of her ingenuity, and the goodness of her heart. But
Mrs. C. lately made an effort on the harp; an instrument, which (she ought
to have considered) requires gracefulness and ease. She was deficient in
both: and her notes were weak and harsh. I was sorry to see so excellent an
instructor of youth, expose herself by an affectation of things beyond her
reach. But I was more concerned to see her sanctioned by the example of
Fordyce.
